This copy includes a frontispiece and eighteen monochrome plates by the British artist Charles Kerr. Collated complete.
The work is a thrilling story predominantly set in South Africa, and follows the protagonist Reverend Thomas Owen as he tries to prove the presence of God by undergoing a series of dangerous trials. Sir Henry Rider Haggard was a British writer specialising in romantic adventure novels often in exotic settings, predominantly Africa, and is considered the father of the 'lost world' literary genre.
Condition
In publisher's original variant red cloth binding with blind titles on front board and gilt on spine. Externally, very smart and bright; spine slightly faded. Minor bumping to extremities. Faint offsetting on rear free end paper. Internally, firmly bound with clean and bright pages.
