A beautifully illustrated edition of eighteenth century satirist, politician and playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan's two best known plays, 'The School for Scandal' and 'The Rivals', both popular comedies of manners. The first edition thus.

Illustrated with a frontispiece and forty-nine further illustrated plates from Edmund Joseph Sullivan, an illustrator recognised as a member of the Art Nouveau movement of book illustration.

With four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, lovely, with bumping to back strip head and tail. Small label to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with areas of significant spotting and light foxing to the latter half of the work.
