First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

The first edition of the second number of The Quarto, an illustrated Victorian magazine edited by John Bernard Stoughton Holborn. Four issues were printed for this periodical from 1896 to 1898, with the aim to showcase the talent of young or unknown artists of the time who had received instruction at The Slade (a school of fine art).

Comprising a miscellaneous of works in English and 'Der Erlkoenig' by Goethe in the original German. With poetry, short stories, essays, musical pieces, and adverts to rear. Each writing is accompanied by an illustration. With contributions by Nellie Syrett, Cyril Goldie, Alfred Jones, and others.

Profusely illustrated throughout. Collated. Seems to be lacking one plate to page 75.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding, with gilt to front board and spine. Externally smart with minor shelfwear and slight edge wear and rubbing to extremities. Slight bumping ot head and tail of spine. Cloth to spine has darkened. Internally, pages one to six are disbound but present, binding is slightly loose. Pages are bright and clean. Profusely illustrated. Collated. Seems to be lacking a plate to page 75.
