'Helen' follows the eponymous character, who is a young orphan left without a fortune after the guardian squandered it. She is taken under the wing of a vicar, and stays in a socialites house with the rich and privileged.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, and thirty-nine plates.

Maria Edgeworth was a prolific author who's talent for social observations attracted the attention of Walter Scott, with whom she corresponded for many years. Her other novels include 'Belinda', 'Ormond', and 'Harry and Lucy'.

Illustrated by Chris Hammond was a very prolific book illustrator in, she illustrated editions of books by Jane Austen, William Makepeace Thackeray, and George Eliot. Though she was unusual for succeeding in working in a predominantly male profession, Hammond hasn't received great acclaim.
