Description

Early Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

The third edition of this work, published in the same year as the first.

A remarkable first hand account of Sudan under the rule of the Khalifa, with comprehensive and lively details on the fighting of the time, and what it was like serving the dervishes.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, one folding map, twenty one plates by R. Talbot Kelly. Collated complete.

Written by Rudolf Calf von Slatin, an Anglo-Austrian soldier and administrator in the Sudan. Translated into English by Major F. R. Wingate.

This work is presented in chronological order of von Slatin's time in the Sudan. There are chapters on the rule of Khalifa Abdullahi, the Mahdist occupation, discent and discord, his plans for escape following incarceration and his eventual fleeing.

A truly gripping account, and a fascinating insight into the politics of Sudan at this time.
