1896 A Handbook of Ornament
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding
Third (Revised) English Edition.
Illustrated with three-hundred full-page illustrations, which contain 'about 3000 illustrations of the elements, and the application of decoration to objects'.
This an informative 'handbook' on ornament, the architectural and decorative art in which parts of a building are embellished. This text by Meyer is incredibly unique, as no other work on this subject had been described and analysed to this extent.
Contents are divided into 'The Elements of Decoration', 'Ornament Applied to Features', and 'Decorated Objects', containing information on objects such as 'The Cross', 'The Lace border', 'The Amphora', 'The Candelabrum', and 'The Shield'.
Franz Sales Meyer (1849-1927) was a German professor of ornament, as well as an author, poet, and painter.
Revised by Hugh Hutton Stannus (1840-1908), a sculptor, architect, and author. Stannus worked quite a bit with the sculptor Alfred Stevens, helping him with artistic metal casting.
Eight pages of publisher's adverts to rear of text.
