Marryat was an officer of the Royal Navy, an early pioneer of nautical fiction. One of his better known novels today is his semi-autobiographical 'Mr Midshipman Easy', set during the Napoleonic Wars, a novel which is included in this set.

Bookplate of the Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie to the front paste downs. Carnegie was one of the richest Americans in history, leading the expansion of the American steel industry. 

From the library of W. A. Foyle at Beeleigh Abbey. William Foyle was the co-founder of Foyles bookshop, founding the leading bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex, which became home to his library, one the largest private libraries in England.

Condition

In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards, bound by Henry Sotheran. Externally, smart. Spines are a little faded. Light patches of rubbing to the leather, a little heavier to the spine of 'The King's Own' and 'Frank Mildmay', and to the front joint of 'The Dog Fiend'. A small amount of loss to the head of the spines of 'The King's Own', 'The Pacha of Many Tales', 'The Dog Fiend', and 'Rattlin'. Minor bumping to the extremities. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
