Description
Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding
George du Maurier (1834-1896) was a Franco-British writer and cartoonist who published in Punch, as well as his novel 'Trilby' and his autobiographical novel 'The Martian'. He was the grandfather of authors Daphne and Angela du Maurier. 'Trilby' was enormously popular upon its release, and is set in an idyllic Paris in the 1850s. It features Svengali, a memorably musician and hypnotist. It has been adapted various times across stage and screen, with one play featuring the protagonist wearing the hat that later came to be known as the trilby. The story was originally published serially in Harper's Monthly between January and August 1894.
