The first English edition of this work, translated from the French with an introduction by D. F. Hannigan. An uncommon work. A novel by Gustave Flaubert originally published in 1874, this work consists of a dramatic poem in prose inspired by a painting of the same name, concerning Saint Anthony the Great in the Egyptian desert as he faces a series of temptations.
Adorned with nine original designs after S. Gorski, each provided in monochromatic variations. Collated, complete. With half title.
Condition
In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally generally sound with shelf wear and cracking to the front joint, considerable fading to the spine, light soiling to the boards. Previous ownership inscription to the front pastedown, RF Rooney dated 1904. Harry Burnham Rooney bookplate to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Adorned with nine original designs after S. Gorski, each provided in monochromatic variations. Collated, complete.
