The fifth edition of 1895, this work was originally published in 1862, and is natural historian John R. Wise's most popular work. A charming study of the New Forest in Hampshire, England, with descriptions of its sceneries, natural history, antiquities, and dialect.
The New Forest is one of the largest tracts of unenclosed pasture land, heathland, and forest in Southern England, proclaimed a royal forest by William the Conqueror, featuring in the Domesday Book.
Featuring sixty-three illustrations by Walter Crane, engraved by W. J. Linton, and two maps, of which twelve are full page etchings and one folding map. Collated, complete. With half title, prefaces to the first, second, and and fourth edition.
Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally sound with some shelf wear and bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spine, which are slightly chipped. With some minor soiling to the boards and some minor rubbing to the front board. The cloth to the spine as well as to the boards has slightly darkened. With Charles Augustus Phillimore's bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally,. firmly bound. With some minor faint spotting to the first and last few leaves, otherwise the pages are generally bright and clean. Featuring sixty-three illustrations by Walter Crane, engraved by W. J. Linton, and two maps, both full page plates and in text. Collated, complete.
