What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Publishers' Original Binding

'Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly' is an anti-slavery novel first published in 1852, which is claimed to have laid the groundwork for the Civil War. It had enormous repercussions upon attitudes towards African Americans and slavery. It is a sentimental novel with Uncle Tom, an African American slave, at its centre. It was an instant best-seller, becoming the second best-selling book of the nineteenth century behind only the Bible. Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811001896) was an abolitionist from a reputable religions family; she wrote some thirty works, and was influential in her public debates on social dilemmas.

With a frontispiece by prolific and celebrated illustrator George Cruikshank.

Condition

In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart, spine a touch discoloured with bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Internally firmly bound, pages are generally bright and clean if a touch age-toned, spotting prominent opposing the frontispiece. A book-worm has caused some very minor damage to the endpapers and frontispiece, not affecting the illustration.
