What Our Customers Say...

Description

Decorative Binding, First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

The first Hugh Thomson peacock edition of this work, also the first fully illustrated edition.

In a very beautiful and striking condition.

This peacock edition has become a classic of book design, being much reprinted in the following years and even printed on a tote bag in the twenty-first century.

Illustrated with a frontispiece and in-text illustrations throughout by Hugh Thomson.

Thomson was an Irish illustrator, who did pen-and-ink illustrations for editions of works by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie.

'Pride and Prejudice' is perhaps one of the most famous love stories of all time. Mr Darcy and Lizzie Bennet suffer equally from their pride and prejudices, ensuring a tumultuous journey for them.

Jane Austen has become one of the most popular Georgian writers, her novels being loved for generations. Her ironic social commentary offers an interesting insight into Upper-Middle class Georgian life. Her other novels are 'Emma', 'Sense and Sensibility', 'Northanger Abbey', 'Mansfield Park', and 'Persuasion'.

Two letters loosely inserted, one dated 1940 from N. Theo-Johnstone, discussing this edition and the novel in general, and another from Theo-Johnston's secretary to Tritton on the same subject.

Collated, dedication leaf has been excised.

Condition

In the original publisher's decoratively decorative cloth and gilt binding. Externally, lovely. Small closed tear to the head of the spine. A few light marks to the rear board.
