What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

A first edition of Thomas Allibone Janvier's account of the development of old New York neighbourhoods, complete with 55 varied illustrations, and 13 maps documenting the city's expansion. As well as plates by political cartoonist William Allen Rogers, the work offers drawings and etchings from the periods under discussion. Janvier's wry style makes for a fascinating chronicle of the city's development since the arrival of Dutch colonists in the early 1600s through to the late 19th century. Including chapters on Greenwich village, and a discussion of the 'Kissing Bridge' at the intersection of Third Avenue and 77th Street, the work offers many interesting facts about the evolution of old New York neighbourhoods.
