Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Complete in ten volumes. Volumes I to VIII consist of Pepys' diary, Volumes IX and X contain an index, and 'Pepysiana'.

Pepys' diaries was kept from 1660 to 1669, and it is now considered to be one of the most important primary sources on the English Restoration.

Pepys was the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both Kings Charles II and James II. 

The diaries are noted for its eyewitness accounts of great events, including the Great Plague of London, the Great Fire of London, and the Second Dutch War.

Volume I, published in 1897, illustrated with a frontispiece, one folding plate, and three plates. 

Volume II, published in 1897, illustrated with a frontispiece, and two plates.

Volume III, published in 1897, illustrated with a frontispiece, and one plate.

Volume IV, published in 1894, illustrated with a frontispiece, and three plates.

Volume V, published in 1897, illustrated with a frontispiece, and two plates.

This edition was edited by Henry B. Wheatley, with notes by Lord Braybrooke.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities, resulting in a small tear to the head of the spine of Volumes I and VII. A few light marks to the boards and spines. Spines of Volumes I, II, III, and V are faded.Dampstains to the boards and endpapers of Volume I, with a small tear to the tail of the rear joint. Rubbing to the boards of Volume II, and a patch of cockling to the head of the front board. Heavier marks to the front board of Volume III. Rubbing to the boards of the index volume. Small mark to the front board of 'Pepsyiana'. Hinges of Volume I are starting but firm. Front hinge of Volumes II, V, and VIII are starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound, Volumes II and V are generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots. Spots heavier to Volume I, with a tidemark to the frontispiece and title page. Small tidemark to the tail of the first and last few pages of Volume VIII.
