What Our Customers Say...

Description

Colour Plates, Fine Binding, First Edition, Illustrated, Signed

Preserved in stunning half-vellum bindings with the original wraps bound in. 'The Portfolio' was a British monthly magazine which promoted contemporary printmaking and etching. It is a beautiful magazine on art and was very popular. These two issues are edited by its founder, Philip Gilbert Hamilton. Hamilton was a keen advocate of printmaking and penned several works on the subject. These two volumes focus on Frederick Waller and Antoine Watteau. To them, Phillips reflects on their lives and careers as print-makers. To the second volume there is a letter addressed to the prior owner of these works, Horace N Pym, from the author. Phillips writes regarding an offer Pym has extended for him to stay at his home. With the bookplate of the solicitor, book collector and editor Horace Pym. Pym is also known as Horatio Noble Pym and is famed for editing the twelve volumes of Caroline Fox's journals. The author of these two volumes is Sir Claude Phillips. Sir Claude was an English writer and the first keeper of the Wallace Collection at Hertford House, writing its first catalogue. He penned several art history works. Illustrated across both volumes. With a frontispiece and two plates to the Watteau volume, in addition to four coloured plates and several in-text illustrations. With a frontispiece and four plates to the Walker volume in addition to several in-text illustrations.
