Early edition of Original Plays by William Schwenck Gilbert in the original publisher's cloth bindings.
The third, second and third series of this work.
W. S. Gilbert was an English dramatist, port, and illustrator. He is best known for the fourteen comic operas produced in collaboration with the composer Arthur Sullivan, including H. M. S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado.
The first series (1894) contains The Wicked World, Pygmalion and Galatea Charity, The Palace of Truth, The Princes, and Trial by Jury.
The second series (1899) contains Broken Hearts, Engaged, Sweethearts, Dan'l Druce, Gretchen, Tom Cobb, The Sorcerer, H. M. S. Pinafore, and The Pirates of Penzance.
The third series (1903) contains Comedy and Tragedy, Foggerty's Fairy, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Patience, Princess Ida, The Mikado, Ruddigore, The Yeomen of the Guard, The Gondoliers, The Mountebanks, and Utopia Limited.
Each volume has thirty two pages of advertisements to the rear.
Prior owner's book plates to the first pastedowns and ink inscriptions to the first free endpapers from 1921. From the library of William Roughead, a well known Scottish lawyer.
Condition
In the original publisher's cloth bindings. Externally, very smart. There is some minor bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and to the extremities. There are some light marks to the boards. Prior owner's book plates to the first pastedowns and ink inscriptions to the first free endpapers from 1921. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean.
