Four volumes of 'The Banbury Cross Series', a twelve volume series of illustrated children's books published between 1894 and 1894, edited by Irish writer, Grace Rhys.

Present here are four volumes of the series, each containing either one or two fairy tales, and illustrated throughout with charming vignette and full plate illustrations:

1894, 'The History of Cinderella or the Little Glass Slipper', and 'Jack and the Bean-Stalk'.

1894 'Jack the Giant Killer & Beauty and the Beast', illustrated by R. Anning Bell.

1895 'The Fairy Gifts and Tom Hickathrift', illustrated by H. Granville Fell.

1895 'Aladdin: Or the Wonderful Lamp', illustrated by Sydney H. Heath.

With the bookplate of Wilbur Macey Stone to the front pastedown of 'Aladdin', contemporary inscription and bookplate to front free endpapers of 'Cinderella', contemporary inscription to verso of front free endpaper of 'Jack the Giant Killer'.

A charming collection of seven classic fairy tales in four delightfully illustrated volumes.

Condition

In the publisher's original pictorial cloth bindings. Fading to back strips, with bumping to back strip head and tails. Of the eight cloth ties that should be present across the four volumes, only 'Jack the Giant Killer & Beauty and the Beast' retain both, with front tie also present to 'Cinderella'. With the bookplate of Wilbur Macey Stone to the front pastedown of 'Aladdin', contemporary inscription and bookplate to front free endpapers of 'Cinderella', contemporary inscription to verso of front free endpaper of 'Jack the Giant Killer'. Internally, firmly bound, with only one volume lightly strained to centre of text block. Pages generally clean and bright, with only the odd light handling mark. Final illustration of 'Beauty and the Beast' hand coloured by prior owner.
