First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce
The first edition of this scarce work.
Inscribed to the recto of the front endpaper, 'C. A. D. Scott, from Lovey Xmas 1906'. Likely gifted to Scott from her husband only two months after the author's death.
Inscription to the title page, 'The Scarlet Petticoat, a collection of short stories, edited by C. A. Dawson Scott'. Scott has annotated and offered corrections throughout the text, some of the notes including quotes from the author's letters.
Catherine Amy Dawson Scott was the cousin of Henry Dawson Lowry, Scott being four years senior. The pair were close throughout their lives. Scott was a fellow writer, playwright, and poet, co-founding a worldwide association of writers, International Pen, in 1921. Later in her life she became a keen spiritualist, stating in her 1926 work 'From Four Who Are Dead' that she started to develop unusual faculties in her late 30s. Her grandfather's cousin was Edmund Dawson Rogers, who co-founded the British National Association of Spiritualists.
Bookplate of Horatio Francis Ninian Scott to the front paste down, the husband of Catherine Amy Dawson Scott. The pair married in 1896, divorcing in around 1916, as they both found themselves traumatised from their experiences in World War One.

Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the spine and extremities. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Gilt to the spine is faded. Only a few light marks to the boards and spine. Bookplate to the front paste down. Ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional scattered spot. Ink annotations to the text.
