A very scarce copy of George Cruikshank's illustrated edition of John Edward Taylor's English language translation of Giambattista Basile's 'Pentamerone', a seventeenth century Neapolitan fairy tale.
Illustrated with thirteen plates by famed caricaturist and illustrator George Cruikshank. Collated, complete.
With the bookplate of British army officer John de Vere Loder, a colonial administrator, to the front pastedown, and the inscription 'John Loder, from Louisa Antrim, Xmas 1897'. This is inscribed to Loder by Louisa McDonnell, Countess of Antrim, a British noblewoman and courtier.
With six pages of advertisements to the rear.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with discolouration to back strip. Bookplate to front pastedown, with inscription to half title. Internally, binding lightly strained. Pages clean and bright.
