Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

First edition thus, the first Housman edition of this work. Tipped in to the front pastedown is a poem referring to Christina Rossetti's death from the Pall Mall Gazette 2 Jan 1895. Loosely inserted is a review from the Sunday Times regarding Rossetti's 'Sing-Song' and a catalogue listing of this work. Prior owner's inscription to the half title in pencil, Alice Hay from Littleton 8 June 97. 'Goblin Market' explores themes of temptation, sacrifice and salvation. Biographers and critics have argued that the themes of temptation, sexual exchange and sisterly redemption in this poem are influenced by its poet’s experience working as an ‘Associate Sister’ at Highgate (British Library). This narrative poem tells the story of Laura and Lizzie who are tempted with fruit by Goblin merchants. The illustrations of Laurence Housman complement this work beautifully. These pen-and ink drawings are strongly reminiscent of the style during the Golden Age of illustration at the turn of the twentieth century. A bright copy of this work, particularly to the boards.
