A very scarce work. This work is a charming look at education at the turn of the twentieth century. Intended for 'infant readers', volume has thirty one short stories with corresponding exercises with a word for each letter of the alphabet. W. & R. Chambers Publishers were known for their educational work, publishing the renowned 'Chambers's Encyclopedia', as well as language and reference titles. With a frontispiece and numerous in-text illustrations throughout. With pages dedicated to script alphabets and figures, numbers, revision of spelling, and a multiplication table. Stamp to the title page 'With the Publisher's Compliments'.
Condition
In the original paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart. Bumping has resulted in the boards to the extremities to be lifting lightly. Light marking to the boards, with a small crease to the front board. Minor cockling to the spine. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Rear hinge has detached, but front board remains firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with just the odd handling mark. Offsetting to the recto of the frontispiece. Page 79/80 is lifting to the tail to the gutter. The odd pencil annotation throughout. Stamp to the title page 'With the Publisher's Compliments'.
