1893 A Study in Scarlet
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Early Edition, Illustrated, Pleasing Copy, Publishers' Original Binding, Uncommon
An early reprint of the third edition, the first edition to include a note on Sherlock Holmes by Dr. Joseph Bell, surgeon and lecturer who inspired the character of Sherlock Holmes.
An early illustrated edition of A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle, the first Sherlock Holmes novel, in which the detective and Dr. Watson make their first appearance. The title comes from a quote by Holmes: "There's the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it."
The story became widely popular from the moment of its publication. Of the original magazine in which the story appears, there are only eleven copies, each of immense value.
There are many short stories featuring Holmes, however this is only one of four full length novels in the original canon.
Interestingly, A Study in Scarlet was the first detective novel to adapt the magnifying glass as an investigative tool.
Profusely illustrated throughout by George Hutchinson.
