Illustrated, Leather Binding

Bound in half leather with gilt lettering and spine decoration. This set contains volumes I - X, XIV, XVI, XVII-XX, XXII, XXIV-XXV, XXVII, XXIX, and XXXIV-XXVIII. Contributors to these volumes include Algernon C. Swinburne, Arthur Conan Doyle, E. Nesbit, Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy, George Meredith, Bram Stoker, Bret Harte, Guy de Maupassant, Arthur Symons, A. T. Quiller Couch, Joseph Conrad, Austin Dobson, H. Rider Haggard, and very many more. Several volumes have a Sharpe & Kellet bookbinder's label to the front pastedown. Several volumes have a C. & H. Ratcliffe bookseller's label to the rear pastedown. The Pall Mall Magazine was first published in 1893, under the patronage of William Waldorf Astor. It was created to publish the finest in poetry and fiction, and interestingly the magazine found itself publishing all manner of artists including Swinburne, Kipling, Meredith and Hardy. 'The Pall Mall Magazine' published poetry, short stories, serialized fiction, and general articles, in a monthly illustrated edition, for the price of one shilling. The volumes were decorated and illustrated with art and photography. The 'Pall Mall Magazine' was a successful and significant periodical of its time.

Condition

In a half leather binding. Externally, generally smart. Slight rubbing to extremities and spine, resulting in small loss to leather of spine to some volumes. Marks and discolouration to rear board, volume seven, with labels partially removed. The top third of the leather of the spine of volume 16 is coming away. Hinges strained to several volumes. Front hinge to volume two, failed. Generally firmly bound. Detached plate to volume 6, but present. Pages generally bright with the occasional spot or handling mark. Pages age toned to edges.
