First English translation of the work.

Dated using Jisc from copies held at the University of Cambridge libraries. 

The original work was written by Athenian historian and general, Thucydides, who is known for his work on the History of the Peloponnesian War where he recounted the war between Sparta and Athens which took place in the fifth century BC.

Translated by William Smith, who was the Dean of Chester and a Greek and Latin scholar.

This work is number twenty-seven in Sir John Lubbock's Hundred Books. In 1886 Principal of the London Working-Men's College, John Lubbock gave a speech outlining 100 essential books to read to provide a liberal education.

With a stamp of 'Sir John Lubbock's One Hundred Books' to the half title and to the title page.

Condition

Rebound in full morocco. Externally, smart, with light rubbing, mainly to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spine.Light fading to the spine. The occasional mark to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot. 'Sir John Lubbock's One Hundred Books' stamp to the half title and to the title page.
