First published in 1890, 'The Sign of the Four' is the second novel to feature Conan Doyle's noted detective Sherlock Holmes, and his assistant, Dr. Watson.

The second edition. This edition has pictorial boards but is hard to find in an acceptable condition

Set in 1888, it has a complex plot involving the Indian Mutiny of 1857, a stolen treasure and a secret pact among four convicts. This novel humanizes Holmes in a way that had not been done in preceding writings.

Rebacked, in the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding.

With the illustrated bookplate of L. C. Coxe to the front pastedown.

In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Rebacked, with boards restored and back strip laid down, and endpapers renewed. Fading to head of back strip, light marks to boards, and bumping to board perimeters. Illustrated bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age tined, with light handling marks throughout. Loss to head of page 63, with significant residue to heads of pages 64 and 65, and to page 208. Pencil marks to rear blank.
