What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Limited Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Signed

The first edition of this work, number 496 of 500 copies, and signed by the author to the limitation page.

The work of Church of Scotland minister and campaigner for the blind Reverend Thomas Burns, the author also of several historical works.

Featuring numerous vignette and full plate illustrations, this work consists of an inventory, believed by the author to be complete, of 'all the vessels belonging to the Church of Scotland which were dedicated for sacramental use prior to 1800, with there inscriptions and, where it has been possible, with extracts of Kirk-Session Records'.

With an interesting chapter also on 'The Disappearance of Church Plate'.

In Scottish minister and philanthropist James Macgregor's preface to this work, he identifies this as the first of its kind, and Burns as 'a successful pioneer in a rich and untrodden field'.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Rubbing to front joint. Significant bumping to spine head and tail. Front and rear hinges starting but holding firm. Internally, binding a little strained in places. Pages bright and generally clean, with the odd spot.
