An impressive history of the Verney family of Middle Claydon, looking at their involvement in the English Civil War, the Commonwealth, and the Restoration. 

The Verney family have resided in the manor of Middle Claydon in Buckinghamshire since the 1460s. This biographical account of the family was compiled from letters and documents at Claydon House, providing a detailed exploration of one family's involvement in this important part of English history.

Volumes I and II were written by Frances Parthenope Verney, the elder sister of Florence Nightingale. She married Harry Verney, the 2nd Baronet, in 1858. Volumes III and IV were written by her daughter-in-law, Margaret Verney, who married Sir Edmund Hope Verney in 1868.

Volume I is illustrated with a frontispiece, one folding plate, one folding genealogy, twelve plates, and in-text illustrations. Twenty-four pages of adverts to the rear. Collated, complete.

Volume II is illustrated with a frontispiece, twelve plates, and in-text illustrations. Collated, lacking page 85/86. Two pages of adverts to the rear. 

Volume III is illustrated with a frontispiece, and nine plates. Twenty-four pages of adverts to the rear. Collated, complete.

Volume IV is illustrated with a frontispiece, ten plates, and in-text woodcuts. Collated, complete.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Light rubbing to the joints and extremities. A few light marks to the cloth. Faint dampstain to the front board of Volume I, dampstain to the front board of Volume II. Spines are faded. Rear hinge of Volume I is strained. Hinges of Volume II are starting. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with scattered spots. Repairs to pages 81 to 84 of Volume II. Faint tidemark to the head of the plates of Volume IV.
