Illustrated, Leather Binding, Prize Binding
Prominent Victorian era Parson-Naturalist and populariser of natural history John George Wood's celebration of pets, with six chapters dedicated to the cat, four on the dog, and five on unconventional pets, including Wood's own chameleon.
With a frontispiece, and numerous vignette illustrations engraved by G. Pearson from drawings by Margery May.
With the illustrated bookplate of Lieutenant Cuthbert Grasemann - an officer of the Royal Engineers during WWI - to the front pastedown, and with a prize inscription to him to a front endpaper, dated 1900. Grasemann was later Public Relations and Advertising Officer for Southern Railway, and then for British Rail’s Southern Region, between 1930 and 1950.
Condition
In a full calf prize binding, with gilt detailing. Light fading to back strip, with minor rubbing to back strip head and tail. Front joint starting to head, with board holding firm. Illustrated bookplate to front pastedown, inscription to a front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright, with exception of frontispiece and one further illustration, which have been lightly hand coloured from by a prior owner.
