Description

First Edition, Folding Maps, Illustrated, Original Source, Scarce

The first English edition of the work. First published in German earlier the same year. Collated compete with thirty two full page monochrome plates, sixty five vignette illustrations and the extremely scarce folding coloured map representing the progress of the expedition inserted into the pocket at the rear of the wrap. Translated from the German by noted translator and children's writer Henry William Dulcken. Dulcken is best known for his translations of the stories by Hans Christian Andersen with this work being an unusual example of his translation, with most of his work being that of German children's literature. With the personal bookplate of George Frederick Harp to the front pastedown. Dr Carl Peters was a German colonial ruler, explorer, politician and author who was a major promoter of the establishment of the German colony of East Africa. Peters is regarded as an extremely controversial figure owing to his beliefs in Social Darwinism and Volkisch philosophy which highly impacted his treatment regarding the indigenous population. New Light on Dark Africa describes Peter's involvement in the German Emin Pasha Expedition which claimed to be for the sole purpose of aiding Emin Pasha to maintain his position as governor of the Egyptian province of Equatoria on the Nile. However, it was later understood that the expedition also had a secondary purpose of territorial annexation. The expedition came to later be recognised for its ambition of crossing 'Darkest Africa' from which this work gets its title. The work acts a highly influential original source work detailing one of the last major European expeditions into the interior of Africa.
