A total of 62 volumes dating from 1891 to 1921. A complete run, spanning 31 years of 'The Strand' with two volume per year. This set is a lovely example of this incredibly popular periodical, with each volume bound in the publisher's original blue cloth binding. First edition of this work in book form. 'The Strand Magazine' has become synonymous with the work of Arthur Conan Doyle, best remembered for the creation of the famous literary character Sherlock Holmes, who featured in four novels and over fifty short stories. Originally a physician, Doyle initially struggled to find a publisher for his first novel. It was not until 1886 that 'A Study in Scarlet' was taken on by War Lock and Co and published in Beeton's Christmas Annual a year later. Doyle's work is still widely considered some of the worlds best crime and detective fiction, which is still used as a literary benchmark to this day. Doyle's works were serialised in 'The Strand' and contributed greatly to the publications success. This large set features two collections of Sherlock Holmes stories known under the titles of 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' (1891-92) and 'The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes' (1891-92) Notably this set features the first appearance in print of 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' one of Doyle best loved detective works. 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' are a collection of 12 stories, titled as follows: The Adventure of The Scandal in Bohemia, The Adventure of The Red-headed League, A Case of Identity, The Boscombe Valley Mystery, The Five Orange Pips, The Man with the Twisted Lip, The Adventures of the Blue Carbuncle, of the Speckled Band, The Engineers Thumb, of The Nobel Bachelor, the Beryl Coronet, The Copper Beeches. 'The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes' are a collection of 12 stories, titled as follows: The Adventure of Silver Blaze, Adventure of the Cardboard Box, The Yellow Face, The Stockbrokers Clerk, The ‘Gloria Scott’, The Musgrave Ritual, The Reigate Squire, The Crooked Man, The Resident Patient, The Greek Interpreter, The Naval Treaty, The Final Problem. Each of these 24 stories are featured in this set. Featuring works of fiction, puzzles, brain teasers and articles, the work was an instant success, and at its height reached a circulation of 500,000. The magazine is best remember for the serialisation of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, which undoubtedly contributing the the publications success. A lovely work perfect for those interested in the early years of this influential publication, or indeed, the society and literature of the late 19th century.
In the publisher’s original cloth binding. Externally sound, with cloth generally bright across the set. Each volume is heavily bumped to the head and tail of the spine, and also to the extremities, with occasional splits to the cloth. This has also resulted in a small amount of loss to the spines of several volumes. Fading to several of the spine with patches of rubbing the front and rear boards, with a tear to the front board of volume XIII. Small tears to the backstrip of several volumes across the set. Rubbing to the joints, and numerous cracks to both the front and rear joints across the set, with instances of the backstrip lifting. Amateur repairs to the front joint of volume XII with the cloth of the front board and the spine sewn together. The odd spot, mark and instance of dampstaining to the front and rear boards of several volumes, with the occasional mark to the fore edges. Light offsetting and occasional spots to the front and rear endpaper across the set. Worming to the tail of the front endpaper of volume LVII. The front endpaper of volume XXXIX is detached but present, also with light worming. The front and rear hinges of each volume are lightly strained, with several tender hinges throughout the set. The front and rear hinges of volume I have failed, with the text block detached. The front hinges of volumes XII and XXXIII have failed. Internally generally firmly bound, heavily strained in places. Numerous pages are loosening throughout the set. With numerous pages detached but present across the set. Binding has failed to the index page of volume LXII, resulting in the backstrip lifting from the text block. Each of the detached pages are lightly chipped to the extremities. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot and mark. Overall this work is in good condition with the overall condition largely impacted by the external condition.
