The 'Minerva Library' edition. First published in 1857. 

Illustrated with a monochrome frontispiece, woodcut vignettes and seven monochrome plates. Collated complete. 

This work was written by Johann Heinrich Barth (Henry Barth), a German explorer and scholar, and contains an account of his travels to North and central Africa. Barth is considered to be one of the greatest explorers of Africa from Europe and, through his skills in speaking and writing in Arabic and African languages, was able to learn much about the cultures in the areas he visited.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth. Externally very smart with rubbing and bumping to the extremities, and slight fading to the spine. Hinges starting. Internally generally firmly bound with frontispiece tender, rear free endpaper starting and minimal strain in places. Pages clean and generally bright with minimal age toning to the extremities. Offsetting to the extremities of the half title with a past owner's signature. Prize inscription to the verso of the frontispiece.
