Description

Fine Binding, Signed Binding

Comprising of the following works by Kingsley: Hypatia Vols I and II (1890); Yeast (1902) ; Alton Locke Volumes I and II (1893); Hereward the Wake Volumes I and II (1893); Westward Ho! Volumes I and II (1893); Two Years Ago Volumes I and II (1901). With the bookplate of Ernest Pretyman to the front pastedown of all volumes. E.G Pretyman was a British Soldier and Conservative Party politician. He served as an MP for Woodbridge Suffolk and also for Chelmsford. He also held the role of Civil Lord of the Admiralty and was Parliamentary and Financial Secretary to the Admiralty for several years. Charles Kingsley had a great interest in history, which is demonstrated through the historical fiction he wrote. Of the novels present to this set 'Westward Ho!', 'Hereward the Wake' and 'Hypatia' are his best known pieces of historical fiction. The novel 'Westward Ho!' inspired the founding of a village by the same name. In a Hatchards of Piccadilly binding. With the binder's stamp to the verso of front endpaper. A lovely set of works, perfect for those with an interest in the works of this important Victorian author.

Condition

In a half morocco binding with paper covered boards. Externally, smart with some minor rubbing to the raised bands and to the head and tail of spines. Very small ink spill to the spine of 'Alton Locke' volume II. Small score mark to the rear board of 'Westward Ho!' resulting in a little loss to the leather. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the occasional light spots to pages.
