1890 The Library Reference Atlas of the World
What Our Customers Say...
Colour Plates, Folding Maps, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Original Binding, Very Scarce
A very scarce work. A collection of eight-four coloured maps, showing each country of the world in great detail. Also describing the climate and altitude of each country. By John Bartholomew, a Scottish cartographer. His father was also a cartographer, and in the 1850s he took over the management of his father's firm in Edinburgh. Over the years, Bartholomew built up a reputation unrivalled by any other cartographer in Great Britain, producing very fine maps. His system of contouring, showing altitudes by a colour scale, makes his maps unique for his time. With an index to the rear. Bookplate to the front pastedown 'Arthur William Alexander'. Collated, complete.
In the original half morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, with some rubbing to the joints, extremities and to the raised bands. Tail of the spine is lifting to the front joint, with some small cracks to the head of the joints. Light marking to the boards and to the spine. Instances of loss of leather to the rear joint. Small bumps to the bottom edges. Front hinge is starting but firm. Rear hinge is strained close to the textblock. Bookplate to the front pastedown 'Arthur William Alexander'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd scattered spot and handling mark, with the spotting heavier to the first and last few pages. Small closed tear to the tail of plate 1 to the gutter.
