Colour Plates, First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding
Undated, dated using Copac. Beautifully illustrated throughout with many chromolithograph coloured plates and in-text vignettes. With a frontispiece, title page and five coloured plates to division one, eight coloured plates to division II, seven plates to division III, seven plates and illustrated title page to division IV, seven plates to division V and a title page and seven plates to division VI. Illustrations are by May Rivers. Collated, complete. Across all divisions, the following practices are discussed: soils and sub-soils, manures, climate, shelter, the formation of the fruit garden, budding, grafting, pruning, planting and much more. There are several handy in-text diagrams to assist with the various techniques used. To the rear of division VI there is the half-titles, title pages and preliminary contents leaves for when the work is bound into three volumes. The plates to this work remain in a bright condition. A beautifully illustrated gardening work.
Condition
In the publisher's full cloth binding. Externally, the volumes are generally smart with minor bumping to the head and tail of spines. Divisions II and V are cocked. Division V is heavily damp stained to the spine and extremities with fading to the spine. Patches of damp staining to the joints and extremities of volume II. Prior owner's inscription to the verso of front endpaper to divisions I, II, III , George Wood. Front hinge to divisions I and VI are strained but firm. All volumes are generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are generally bright. Some minor offsetting to the endpapers of most volumes. Occasional light spots to pages, with slightly heavier spotting to division VI.
