In uniform cloth bindings. Being his historical essays, National Sermons and several literary and general essays. Kingsley's strong association with Christian socialism is a present theme in many of his essays, which vary from discussing political reform to society and the arts. Across these three volumes there are essays on the stage, Shelley, Tennyson, Ancient Civilisation, Buchanan and more.

Condition

In uniform cloth bindings. Externally, smart with some sunning to the spines and to the top board of the 'Historical Essays' volume. Light rubbing to the joints. Prior owner's inscription to the verso of front endpaper to the 'Historical Essays' volume, ' To our Bess from me and my old man Xmas 1890 R Simpson.' The same inscription is to the verso of front endpaper to the 'Literary and general essays' volume. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper to the Sermons volume 'Allen G Watling'. Heavy spotting and offsetting to the endpapers. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with the odd spots.
