An early edition. In a smart half calf binding with gilt detail to the spine. Five works bound in one volume. A collection of works by Charles Kingsley. Kingsley was a broad church priest of the Church of England, a professor, social reformer, historian and writer. He is known for his association with Christian socialism and the Working Men's College. He was also a close friend of Charles Darwin. This collection comprises of: "Yeast, A Problem". The first novel by Kingsley, written as an attack on Roman Catholicism and the Oxford Movement. "Two Years Ago". A novel exploring the problems of religion and conduct, amidst a backdrop of English scenery. "Hereward the Wake". The story of a historical Anglo-Saxon figure who led resistance against the Normans. "Hypatia". A fictionalised account of the life of the philosopher, Hypatia. "Westward Ho!" A historical novel based upon the experiences of the Elizabethan privateer, Amyas Preston, who sets sail to the New World.

Condition

In half calf binding. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities and spine. Fading to the spine and a few light marks to the boards. Front hinge is starting but firm. Offsetting, age-toning and a few spots to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Creasing to the rear free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age-toned but otherwise bright and clean. A few scattered spots towards the front and rear of the novel.
