    Three novels by Charles Kingsley in one volume, each the 1889 edition.

    Comprising:

    'Westward Ho!,' historical novel based on the Preston Somers Expedition and Raleigh's El Dorado Expedition, where a group of Victorian privateers set sail for the New World.

    'Hypatia' fictionalised biographical sketch of the life of the philosopher Hypatia, telling of a young monk who travels to Alexandria and becomes involved in the political and religious unrest of the day. 

    'Yeast, a Problem' first novel by Kingsley that attacks Roman Catholicism and the Oxford Movement on celibacy, the game laws, bad landlords and bad sanitation, &c. 

    Ex libris bookplate to front pastedown, from the library of David Stather, a remarkable private collection of early books, pamphlets and manuscripts with main interest in English history.

    Condition

    In half crushed morocco binding over marbled boards, marbled endpapers, gilt to edges. Externally generally smart with some shelf wear, rubbed to spine and extremities, back strip gently faded. Internally, firmly bound. Odd light minor spotting to occasional leaf, pages generally bright and clean.
