1889 Sylvie and Bruno
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Fine Binding, First Edition
This copy was a gift of the illustrator, Harry Furniss, and has this pencil inscription to front free endpaper: 'Given me by the illustrator originally, when I was a small boy in Bournemouth, who used to play with "Sylvie and Bruno" - Harry Furniss' nicknames for his two children, in 1889.' Previous owner's ink inscription to front free endpaper reads H. Sheridan-Bieders. The novel has two main plots; one set in the real world at the time the book was published (the Victorian era), the other in the fantasy world of Fairyland. While the latter plot is a fairy tale with many nonsense elements and poems, similar to Carroll's Alice books, the story set in Victorian Britain is a social novel, with its characters discussing various concepts and aspects of religion, society, philosophy and morality.
Condition
In a full morocco binding with gilt textblock edges. Externally, sound with wear to extremities and slight straining to front hinge. Internally, firmly bound. Bright with foxing to the first and last few pages, although text remains generally clean.
