Limited edition, number 159 of 780 copies printed for England and America. Written by his brother-in-law Antoine Hamilton. Count de Gramont was the younger half-brother of Antoine III of Gramont and uncle of Catherine Charlotte de Gramont, Princess of Monaco. Illustrated with thirty four etchings on India paper by C Delort. This biography was first published in 1713 after being composed between 1704 and 1710. It has been said that some of the work was written at Gramont's dictation. This work made Hamilton one of the classical writers of France. This edition has been edited with notes by Sir Walter Scott.
Condition
In original cloth binding with gilt stamping to spine and front board. Externally, generally smart with small areas of bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Small patches of slight rubbing to the joints and to the head and tail of spine. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Bookplate of one Lily E X Routhe by E M Blake to the front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with spotting to the first and last few pages with instances of occasional spots throughout.
