First edition, second issue. Illustrated with a frontispiece, twenty-eight plates, and many in-text images. Collated complete. Set in the Ptolemaic era of Ancient Egypt, this novel mixes historical action with supernatural events, as Harmachis is charged by the Priesthood to overthrow Cleopatra. Written by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, an English writer of adventure fiction romances set in exotic locations and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. Publisher's advertisements to the rear dated August 1889 as per the second state.
Condition
In the original full blue cloth binding. Externally, smart ith light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spine and the odd small mark to the boards. Front hinge starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting to the extremities. Previous owner's ink stamp to the front endpaper and pastedown.
