Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Uncommon

A first edition of this uncommon and important work by the French-American anthropologist Paul Belloni Du Chaillu. With 1366 illustrations and a map, collated and complete. In this broad study of the early history, manners, and customs of the ancestors of the English-speaking nations, Du Chaillu demonstrates the importance of the Norse to the cultural evolution of the British Isles between the fifth and eleventh centuries. Following a visit to Norway in 1871, the anthropologist laboured over sagas and literary remains of those inhabiting the Scandinavian peninsula from the Stone Age to the Middle over a period of eight years. The two volumes include chapters on diverse topics, such as mythology, religion and superstition, marriage customs, weaponry, and Norse expeditions. These two volumes previously belonged to Walsall public libraries, and the first volume as a stamp and some numbers in ink to the title page of both volumes. One can also see the remains of library numbers to the spine, and a stamp to the bottom and top edges of the text block. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper of volume I. The book previously belonged to 'Ethel J Foster, Moor Park, Ludlow. July 1889'. With a page of publisher's adverts to the rear of volume II.

Condition

In the publisher's original burgundy cloth binding. Externally, smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards of volume I, less so to the second volume. Both are a little rubbed and a little discoloured to the spine. Lightly bumped and rubbed to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, generally firmly bound, although the gutter is visible between pages 160 and 161 of volume II. Aside from some light foxing to the front of volume I, pages are bright and clean throughout.
