What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

With the bookplate of one 'Arthuri Fisher' or Arthur Fisher to the front pastedowns of all volumes. The majority of the illustrations to these volumes are by Gordon Browne. Browne was a famous artist and illustrator during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He was the son of Hablot Knight Browne, or 'Phiz' who was famous for his caricatures in 'Punch' magazine and for his recognisable illustrations to Charles Dickens' works. To volume II the contents note that there is an etching at page 48 from Act V Scene 2 Lines 723-725 of Love's Labours Lost 'God Save You Madame!'. This plate isn't present, however there is a plate from Love's Labours Lost as the frontispiece which is from Act V Scene 2 Line 726. This volume therefore has the correct number of plates, the contents states different plates. Collated, complete. This set of Shakespeare's works have been edited by Henry Irving and Frank A Marshall. Marshall and many other noted Shakespearean scholars of the nineteenth century have written a useful introduction to each play providing both historical and performative context in addition to short summaries of the plays. Irving was an English stage actor during the Victorian era, he was a leading representative of English classical theatre and was known for taking complete responsibility for sets, lighting, casting as well as acting in all his productions. A very smart set of works by the world's pre-eminent dramatist.
