First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding
The first UK edition in book form. This was preceded by a version printed as the "Summer Number" of the Illustrated London News, released in June 1888, and by the authorized U.S. Harper & Brothers edition, also published in June 1888.
The first UK edition in book form, first issue, with a thirty-one page catalogue dated October 1888 to the rear, as called for, alongside the typo of "Johnson" for "Johnston" on page 284.
Illustrated with a frontispiece and fifteen plates. Collated, complete.
An early novel by H. Rider Haggard, revolving around a marooned man's will that has been tattooed on the back of a woman.
Condition
In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Small area of fading to head of rear board. Discolouration to back strip, with bumping to back strip head and tail. Ink spot to centre of back strip. Front hinge strained, and a touch tender. Internally, binding lightly strained throughout. Pages bright, with light spotting throughout.
