Written by Charles Kingsley, a broad church priest of the Church of England, university professor, social reformer, historian, novelist and poet who was particularly associated with Christian socialism. Some volumes are illustrated by the author and Edward Linley Sambourne, an English cartoonist and illustrator best known as a draughtsman for the satirical magazine Punch. This set includes: Two Years Ago, 1888. Alton Locke, Tailor and Poet: An Autobiography, 1890. The Heroes or Greek Fairy Tales for My Children, 1892. Illustrated throughout. The Water-Babies: A Fairy Tale for a Land-Baby, 1893. Illustrated throughout. Hypatia or New Foes with an Old Face, 1893. Westward Ho! or The Voyages and Adventures of Sir Amyas Leigh, Knight of Burrough, in the County of Devon, in the Reign of Her Most Glorious Majesty Queen Elizabeth, 1893. With a portrait frontispiece. Hereward the Wake 'Last of the English', 1893. Previously held in the library of William Hesketh Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme, an English industrialist, philanthropist, and politician. He served as Member of Parliament for the Wirral constituency between 1906 and 1909, as well as being appointed Justice of the Peace for Cheshire and High Sheriff of Lancashire in later years.

Condition

Bound in half blue calf with marbled boards. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and rubbing resulting in minor loss to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot or handling mark. Previous owner's bookplates to the front pastedown and endpapers.
