A very scarce work of children's fiction from the Kirby sisters, with coloured frontispiece. Although they are better known for their works on botany and natural science, writers and illustrators Elizabeth and Mary Kirby recount the extraordinary life of 16th century goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini in this very scarce work for children. Gold blind stamp to front board from Faringdon House in Bournemouth. Ink inscription to recto of front free endpaper reads 'Winifred Garden. !st Class French Prize. Christmas 1890.' A small chip to the fore edge on page 13.

Condition

Bound in red leather. Externally, generally smart. Boards are a little rubbed, particularly to the fore edge and the joints. A little loss of leather to the head and tail of the spine. Both front and rear joint starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. A little foxed to the fast and last few pages, but otherwise pages are generally clean. A small chip to the fore edge on page 13.
