A biography on the life of Charles George Gordon, a British Army officer, who is often known as Chinese Gordon, Gordon Pasha, and Gordon of Khartourm.

Gordon served in the Crimean War with the British Army, and made his military reputation in China.

Illustrated with a frontispiece.

Written by Mary Anne Hearn under the name Marianne Farningham. She is known for being one of the few female writers in the Victorian era to come out of the lower classes.

Prior owner's pencil inscription to the front pastedown, 'William H. Ogden, Grove House, Dec 8th /88'. Stamp and ink inscription to the rear pastedown.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with a tidemark to the rear board. A few other minor marks to the boards and spine. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Prior owner's pencil inscription to the front pastedown. Stamp and ink inscription to the rear pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some spots.
