The complete three volume first American edition the Dean of Westminster Abbey Arthur Penrhyn Stanley's historical study of the Abbey, in signed half morocco bindings from the publisher, Arthur Penrhyn Randolph.

These three volumes are each numbered 98 of the 600 copies of this work printed, with the publisher's stamp to the limitation page.

This first US edition is printed from a later UK edition left by the Dean at his death, annotated with his own corrections and additions.

Volume I is subtitled 'The Foundation - The Coronations - The Royal Tombs', volume II 'The Monuments' and volume III 'Before and Since the Reformation'.

With an engraved frontispiece to each volume, and twelve plates to volume I, thirteen to volume II and fourteen to volume III. Collated, complete.

Condition

In signed half calf bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Rubbing to back strip heads and tails, with small losses to head of volume I and III spine labels. Light rubbing to joints and board perimeters. Binder's stamps to verso of front free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
