What Our Customers Say...

Description

Author's Presentation Copy, Colour Plates, First Edition, Folding Maps, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce, Signed

The first edition of this scarce work.

An interesting association copy, inscribed by the author's mother, who edited this work, to the half-title - 'Herbert H. Cozens Hardy, with Caroline Colman's best wishes, for the New Year 1887'. Herbert was the younger brother of Caroline, and the uncle of the author of this work, Russell James Colman. Herbert's bookplate to the front paste down. Herbert Cozens-Hardy was politician and judge who served as the Master of the Rolls from 1907 to 1918.

The author's mother, Caroline Colman, married into the Colman's mustard family in 1856. Caroline distinguished herself by her influence over the social welfare of the company, and introduced many social measures for the employees of Carrow Works. Notably she established Carrow Girls' Home, to prevent the loneliness of the single girls employed at Carrow.

Illustrated with a colour folding map to the frontispiece.

Printed for private circulation, 'Trifles From a Tourist' comprises of a series of letters written by Russell James Colman whilst he travelled round the world in 1885 to 1886. The letters were written to his mother, Caroline.

These letters show Russell's travels through the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan, Ceylon, and Egypt.

Loosely inserted is a letter from Russell to the reader, issued with the volume.

Collated, complete.
