A new, popular edition. In a handsome half calf binding with decorative gilt detail to the spine. Bound by A. Denny. A selection of Lord Macaulay's famous essays, published in the Edinburgh Review and other periodicals. Covering various political and historical topics, these writings were known for their emphasis on a progressive model of British history, often attributed to the Whig party. Followed by Macaulay's renowned collection of narrative poems, 'Lays of Ancient Rome'. Featuring his most famous works, 'Ivry', and 'The Armada'. Thomas Babington Macaulay was a British historian, Whig politician and writer who served as the Secretary at War between 1839 and 1841.

Condition

In half calf binding with gilt detail. Externally, very smart with some rubbing to the edges. Slight fading to the edges of the rear board. Light marks to the boards. Spotting to the reverse of the free endpapers. Internally, binding slightly creased but still very firm. Pages age-toned but otherwise bright and clean with just the odd spot.
