Illustrated, Very Scarce
A unique sketchbook by Charles George Harper, containing his original sketches, inscribed to the recto of the front endpaper 'C. G. Harper, 43 Connaught Street, Hyde Park, W. 1886'.
Containing a total of twenty-seven leaves of original sketches.
Harper was the author of many self-illustrated travel books, in which he explored the roads of Britain. In total he published around 170 topographical works, providing a brilliantly detailed insight into the country. In 1886 Harper was 23 years old.
The sketches in this volume are done neatly in ink, depicting Back Court Smithfield, a corner of St. Bartholomew's, All Hallow's Barking, Washhouse Court Charterhouse, Farley Mount, Farley Chamberlayne, one portrait, one watercolor painting, carved oak panels, and more.
Condition
In the original quarter morocco binding with cloth to the boards, lacking the backstrip. Light rubbing to the boards. Minor bumping to the extremities. Bookseller's label to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound, though two sketches are detached. Pages are bright and clean with only a few scattered spots.
